June 2019 Food Trends
Food | 3rd June 2019
Deirdre Moriarty is the Musgrave MarketPlace trends expert. Below she discusses the June 2019 food trends that have caught her eye.
In this month’s trend update, I look at the EU legislation that may change how we label vegan and vegetarian foods, Starbucks new Japanese store and changing technology in Amazon Go stores. Have a great month!
Do you want fries with your Veggie Disc?
Members of the European Parliament have voted on a piece of food labelling legislation which protects terms such as burger and steak, indicating that they can only be used to describe meat. So instead of a veggie burger and fries consumers could be ordering veggie discs and fries, it just doesn’t quite have the same ring! The legislation will go to the EU parliament for sign off after the May elections, so if you serve vegan or vegetarian products as part of your foodservice offering be sure to keep an eye on this. In other plant-based news, Burger King in the states are trialling a vegetarian Whopper burger using the ‘impossible burger’. It will be interesting to see if this is rolled out to other countries.
Starbucks continue to roll out its Reserve Concept
In March, Starbucks opened its latest Reserve site in Tokyo. I’ve visited the Starbucks reserve in Seattle and Milan and they are a must for any coffee aficionado, if you are in Milan you must try their Nitro gelato affogato, it’s the best ice-cream I’ve ever tasted! The Japanese coffee market drives some different and exciting seasonal innovation, so I can’t wait to see the coffee menus at the Tokyo reserve for Summer and Christmas.
Amazon Go rollout continues
There are now 10 Amazon Go stores in the United States. For those not familiar with these stores, they are check-out free with in-store technology tracking what you are buying and charging it directly to your account. While this is in the retail space it’s interesting to see the use of technology, and consumers changing expectations around convenience, which will have knock-on effects for foodservice.
